Iboga Guidance: What is it, what can it do? (Part 1 of 3). July 1, 2026
You won't find a lot of this in other iboga guides btw
Hey Lovey Bunny 🐰 please first check this video on beach morning glory leaf to make iboga much more comfortable!
And after reading the guide, if you do try iboga based on this guide, please fill out my survey form so we can see how well it works for people!
I have a quick-reference web app for the guide, and a guided inner child reparenting and self-hypnosis inner-communion practice app.
Note: there are tons of iboga scammers out there. If you message me I can help you locate a currently trustworthy vendor or provider.
This isn't the only Tabernanthe iboga tutorial you can find on the net, but I have found others to be providing a lot of dangerous misinformation and myths, which is why I put together this one.
Here is a conference call version of the guide with participant Q&A from the Awakening Allies group in Kenya in early 2026 (may contain some outdated info):
You might also wish to consult the somewhat helpful (tho sometimes bizarre and contradictory) info at myeboga.com and the r/Iboga subreddit.

What is the history of Iboga?
For an in-depth study, you can read this journal article . But here is a shorter history (note, some of my info here is quoted in gray from another guide which has some bad info and some good info, thus I don't want people to just read that guide):
Iboga has a long history of use as a medicine and spiritual sacrament in central Africa. The legend goes that the forest people (Pygmies -- who are now endangered due to encroaching civilization, World Wildlife Fund murderers, war zones, & pollution, first discovered it by observation of animals such as boar, porcupines and gorillas consuming the root. Then, a few hundred years ago, some Bantu tribes learned from the Pygmy iboga-based cult called Bwiti, and some of them added Christian trappings to it. I avoid the Bwiti cult personally because it requires you to do animal sacrifices and keep secrets and do black magic against anyone who promotes iboga without being in their cult. Iboga can help synchronize your brain hemispheres, like loveyhuasca can but with more explicit communication vs symbolism, more like meditation:
The West knows Iboga for the principal alkaloid in the bark, ibogaine, and its addiction interrupting effects. Iboga is not only effective at breaking addictions but also a powerful ally in offering "space" for breaking destructive habits and behavior patterns. Venturing on an Iboga journey is a personal and therapeutic experience, and it will tend to confront you with your past and elements of your shadow. For many, iboga takes the form of a teacher…it is direct yet not overbearing, both powerful and gentle, having a soft touch while being straight to the point.
Is all Iboga the same?
Every iboga tree actually has a different spirit to it, but they can be classified mainly into three categories.
As for potency, many people claim that Gabonese bark is the strongest, but the actual fact is that Iboga has no idea what country it grows in. The main factors are climate, soil fertility, and age of the tree (older = stronger). Also important is the ethnobotanical phenotype (not technically the sex) of the tree (surprisingly, most iboga providers don’t know about female iboga), because that changes the alkaloid profile, and some of the alkaloids have less subjective potency compared to ibogaine, depending on how you are measuring the effects.
Male iboga bark is traditionally used to improve physical health, hunting prowess, and is sometimes said to be better for battling addictions, but from the anecdotal evidence I've seen, that's not clear at all. Also, male iboga is definitely more stimulating and in your face, and almost surely more cardiotoxic.
Female trees are more gentle and loving, and better for spiritual purposes and for micro-dosing, and the Pygmies normally use the female trees in their ceremonies. Female iboga used to be called T. manii.
Some people like to take male & female together. I tried it a few times. At around 2g of each tho, they started fighting in my mind for control of the frame, every second switching from love to logic. YMMV. I prefer the more clear-headed and balanced, but half the potency tree, “bisexual/healer iboga” aka Tabernanthe elliptica, but they say not to flood dose with it as it causes headache (which agmatine might fix):

What does iboga feel like?
While under the influence of iboga [at higher doses] the user often views themselves in a detached, meditative state. It helps if you already have a good meditation and insight practice (see my guide).
During the experience, one is able to view their life without the full emotional intensity and attachment such experiences may normally hold. This allows one to process things without being emotionally overwhelmed. Many even report viewing their life from the perspective of those they've affected rather than from their own perspective. Much of the healing from iboga happens as a result of seeing yourself in an honest way:
Iboga provides a full brain defrag, while providing one with a thorough detox at the same time. It is a multifaceted plant that is physically, mentally and spiritually cleansing and grounding. Many people view iboga as a profound way of pressing the reset button on life, and to provide a fresh start to enact change. After taking iboga it is easier to move in a different direction and gain new, and sometimes hilariously healing perspectives on life. My friend Ryan, for example, who has taken more iboga than anyone I’ve ever heard of:
But new perspectives on life can lead to rash decisions that don’t pan out well, which is why it’s best after psychedelic trips to postpone important life decisions like divorce, quitting your job, moving countries, until your analytical mind comes back online. But don’t wait so long that your insights and intuition are hard to recall and integrate into the analytical mind and experiential record.
A Gentler Road
While much of the talk about iboga centers on high dose ibogaine floods, perhaps the best general approach, which I will describe more in-depth in the next sections, is to eat low doses, or even brushing microdoses into the gums occasionally to help with depression/anxiety/meditation/self-hypnosis/inner child therapy or to see if it can help other health issues. I've experienced astounding brain defrags even with low doses!
You can also read this post on post-iboga integration steps, which is in some ways more in-depth.

Amazing guide! So much useful information for those interested in utilizing this miraculous plant to improve themselves. Also, great for those who have already sat with this medicine and want to learn more. Wish I read through this guide before I sat with Iboga last year. Didn’t even know there were different ethnobotanical phenotypes for this plant! Such a great resource and read 👍
It took gpt 5.6 sol pro like 15 tries with hints before it came up with this when i asked what's the funniest thing about Bwiti (the iboga religion of Gabon). Still not the exact answer but close and maybe funnier. Screenshot in comments. Link for paid subscribers who ask
